It all started in 2004 when Dereje Dagne, a young man who grew up in the streets of Addis Ababa, formed a circus along with other street children. Realizing how this changed their lives in a positive way, wanted to share with other children that experience.

Since then, they have never stopped looking for how to become role models. They train young people living in disadvantaged areas of Addis Ababa, trying to keep them away from the risks of a dangerous lifestyle and urban poverty.

Through the Italian Center for Aid to Children (CIAI) and the international NGO Fondation Alta Mane, Dagne and his circus colleagues began working with Giorgia Giunta in 2008, a CIAI staff member. "Her talent and creativity fascinated me, but what really convinced me was her commitment to others and to the community," she says.

These young artists like to mix circus and theater in their presentations. In doing so, they can increase awareness-raising campaigns addressing social and health issues, both in Addis Ababa and in rural areas.

But in addition to giving public shows, Fekat Circus also works six days a week at the Hospital León Negro. They are part of a team of clown doctors who entertain children hospitalized.
